Abstract

Capturing images underwater is challenging due to haze caused by light reflected from the surface and scattered by water particles. Color changes also occur because light is attenuated differently across wavelengths. This paper proposes a novel systematic approach to enhance underwater images using a dehazing algorithm that compensates for attenuation discrepancy along the propagation path and considers the possible presence of an artificial light source. Once the depth map, i.e., the distance between objects and the camera, is estimated, the foreground and background within a scene are segmented. The light intensities of the foreground and background are compared to determine whether an artificial light source is used during image acquisition. After compensating for the effect of artificial light, haze and wavelength-dependent attenuation along the underwater propagation path to the camera are corrected. Subsequently, water depth in the image scene is estimated based on the residual energy ratios of different color channels present in the background light. Based on the attenuation corresponding to each wavelength, color change compensation is performed to restore color balance. Noise effects are further reduced using frequency filtering techniques.
