Abstract

Shobha De is one of the most popular contemporary Indian English writers known for her bold narrative style, realistic characterization, and representation of metropolitan society. Her fiction presents the emotional, social, and cultural realities of urban India through simple language, conversational narration, realistic dialogues, and contemporary urban expressions. The present paper examines the narrative strategies and stylistic innovations used by Shobha De in her novels. It analyzes how De employs narrative techniques such as first-person narration, realistic dialogue, satire, urban vocabulary, psychological description, and contemporary social commentary to portray modern metropolitan culture. The study also explores how her writing style reflects the emotional complexities, materialism, loneliness, glamour, and identity crisis of urban society. Through novels such as Socialite Evenings, Starry Nights, Second Thoughts, and Sisters, Shobha De creates realistic narratives that capture the rhythm and atmosphere of metropolitan life. Her stylistic innovation lies in combining simplicity with emotional depth and social realism. The study concludes that Shobha De’s narrative style plays a major role in making her fiction socially relevant, psychologically realistic, and accessible to contemporary readers.
