In today’s world, sustainable development plays an important role and has become a global issue because many environmental problems include (pollution, deforestation, and climate change), social inequality can be seen in unequal access to (education, digital resources, and economic opportunities among different sections of society), and resource depletion has been increasing rapidly (Hasan et al., 2025). In this situation, higher education institutions play significant roles because these institutions shape future generations and create awareness among students and society. This study mainly focuses on the concept of sustainable development and sustainable practices in higher education institutions. This study focuses on green campus, saving energy, saving water, waste management, and digital technologies, which have been discussed in this paper. Higher education institutions help in making students responsible citizens by providing proper education, encouraging research activities, and involving them in community-based programs. This paper also finds the problems or challenges faced by institutions in implementing sustainability practices, which include lack of awareness, lack of funds, and lack of facilities, etc. These are some of the issues which create problems in implementing sustainable practices. This study has given some practical suggestions which help higher education institutions promote sustainable development effectively. In conclusion, sustainable practices in higher education are essential for achieving long-term sustainable development and preparing future generations to address global sustainability challenges.
