Abstract

Agriculture continues to play a significant role in India’s rural economy by providing employment, income, food security and livelihood opportunities to a large section of the population. This study examines the relationship between agricultural productivity and rural economic development in India, with particular emphasis on agricultural income, employment and rural wages. The study analyses trends in productivity per hectare, productivity across major crops and changes across different periods. It also examines the influence of major agricultural inputs, including irrigation, fertilisers, improved seeds, agricultural machinery, institutional credit and technology, on productivity. Correlation and regression analysis are proposed to assess the relationship between agricultural productivity and rural income and employment. The analysis indicates that improvements in agricultural productivity can contribute to higher agricultural output, farm income and rural purchasing power. However, productivity-enhancing mechanisation and technological change may reduce the relative dependence on agricultural labour and accelerate the movement of workers towards non-farm activities. The study argues that productivity growth should therefore be accompanied by rural infrastructure, skill development, credit access,

market linkages and agro-processing opportunities. Strengthening these complementary factors can promote inclusive agricultural growth, reduce rural poverty and contribute to sustainable rural economic development in India.
