Abstract

Management Information Systems (MIS) have become indispensable tools for the effective administration of academic libraries in the contemporary knowledge society. The rapid expansion of higher education, increasing dependence on digital resources, and growing expectations of users have significantly transformed the operational environment of libraries. Academic institutions in Uttar Pradesh are increasingly adopting Management Information Systems to automate routine functions, improve administrative efficiency, facilitate decision-making, and enhance information services. An effective MIS integrates hardware, software, databases, communication technologies, and human expertise to support planning, organizing, controlling, and evaluating library operations. The implementation of such systems enables academic libraries to optimize resource utilization, strengthen collection management, improve user services, and ensure timely access to scholarly information.

The present study examines the role of Management Information Systems in improving library administration in academic institutions of Uttar Pradesh. The research evaluates the influence of MIS on administrative efficiency, library automation, digital resource management, user satisfaction, staff productivity, and institutional decision-making. It also investigates the challenges associated with MIS implementation, including inadequate technological infrastructure, shortage of trained personnel, financial constraints, resistance to organizational change, and cybersecurity concerns. The study adopts a descriptive research design and proposes the collection of primary data through structured questionnaires from librarians, library professionals, faculty members, research scholars, and students across selected academic institutions. Secondary data are gathered from books, research journals, government reports, policy documents, and institutional publications.

The study is expected to reveal that effective implementation of Management Information Systems significantly improves the quality of library administration by increasing operational transparency, reducing manual workload, supporting evidence-based decisions, and enhancing user-oriented services. The findings will provide valuable recommendations for policymakers, educational administrators, and library professionals to strengthen digital governance and information management practices in academic libraries throughout Uttar Pradesh.
