Abstract

Indigo Dabu print is a traditional textile printing technique originating from Rajasthan, India, characterized by its unique use of natural indigo dye and mud resist methods. This craft combines the rich cultural heritage of Indian textiles with sustainable practices, as artisans utilize locally sourced materials and eco-friendly processes. The technique involves creating intricate patterns using a mud paste made from clay and other natural ingredients, which resists dye when the fabric is submerged in an indigo bath. The result is a stunning interplay of deep indigo hues and earthy patterns, reflecting the artistic expressions of the artisans and the cultural narratives embedded in their work. Despite its artistic significance, Indigo Dabu print faces challenges from industrial mass production, leading to a decline in artisan livelihoods and traditional knowledge. This study explores the historical origins, techniques, and motifs associated with Indigo Dabu print, emphasizing its cultural importance and the need for preservation in a rapidly changing textile landscape. Additionally, the research highlights current market trends, the potential for sustainable fashion, and the role of consumer awareness in promoting handcrafted textiles. By advocating for the recognition and support of this unique craft, this study aims to contribute to the revitalization of Indigo Dabu print as a sustainable and culturally significant art form.
