Career Awareness And Career Preferences Among Senior Secondary Students: A Descriptive Study Of A Government Girls' School In Patna

Career selection becomes a crucial issue in adolescence because young people think about their future education and occupation. This descriptive study will discuss career awareness and career preference of 30 students of Class XI from PM SHRI Bankipur Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Patna. Career counseling consisted of four sessions that comprised of career awareness, questionnaire exercise and individual counseling session. Among these students, 26 are from Arts, 3 are from science and 1 is from Commerce background. Teaching became the most popular career option, then comes police service, UPSC, law, railway service, medical service, domestic work and engineering. This finding reveals that there is a need for proper career awareness and individual counseling to explore student’s interest and career choices. However, due to its descriptive nature of available data, no causal conclusion can be drawn about the efficacy of counseling.
